This is the Project That Does Not End…
Three months ago we started renovating our basement. It still isn’t finished, but we are at the ‘picking out colors’ stage and trying to get everything to complement each other. When we bought this house we had very different ideas about what the inside of it should look like. The weird thing is, this time around Bubby and I are actually agreeing on just about everything. Unless Bubby isn’t fully stating his opinion, which he has been known to do. But he keeps saying the basement is going to look “awesome” so I think he really does like it. Hard to tell sometimes with that one. I think my tastes have changed quite a bit in the last few years. I used to be really drawn to bold, bright colors and want the house to look like a rainbow, which it kind of did for awhile. But I have moved away from some of that and tend to go for what I like to call “bold neutrals”. A sign of maturity? Old age? Failing eyesight?
Undertaking this project has given me a new-found respect for designers, architects, decorators and all that goes into the furnishing of a room. A different shade of a color or putting two colors together can completely change the entire look of a room. We should know, we repainted the walls after our chosen gray came out too blue. And don’t get me started on the many, many different whites. White is not just white. And lighting is so important! Paint colors look completely different in the store than they do in your home. How do those folks on Design Star do it?!?! Sites like this one and this one have been great sources of inspiration for me
I hope to be showing you pictures of the finished project soon. But this does seem to be the Never Ending Basement Renovation, so it may be awhile. It just goes on and on my friends…

You should have respect for architects!
I know exactly what you’ve been going through. I had the same problem at my house. I picked out some paint chips at the office that I loved, got them home and they looked like a different color. Also, colors change at different times of day, and during different seasons. I can’t wait to see your finished basement!
Maybe this is becoming an interior design / architecture blog?
P.S. – I like the “grays” you have picked out – gray is a color that ages well.
