A couple of weeks ago I received an email from Gretchen at Mind Flush. It seems my pitiful sob story of my worst trip to the DMV warranted a prize! Gretchen is also the purveyor of Lazy Mama Designs and I got to choose one of her products as my prize. Not too shabby, eh? I chose a swaddling blanket, mainly because I have a thing for rocketships. I’m not sure if I’ll give it away or keep it, but Gretchen’s blankies would make a great affordable handmade baby gift. It came with instructions (with pictures for you non-readers) for how to use the blanket as a nursing cover-up and how to swaddle a baby. It’s multi-functional! Go check her out.

Yeah, I know I suck. I haven’t been going anywhere, I haven’t been doing anything or crafting anything and I sure as hell haven’t been cooking anything. The squirrels are still eating my pumpkins, all 27 of them. Arwyn is still cute, except for the giant gross dump she took in her pull-up early this morning (this one’s for you, Isaac). That was decidedly NOT cute. Still trying to figure out how to get her to get up to use the bathroom, when she can obviously so easily just…go in her pants.
So this is just to say that we’re alive and we’re very boring right now. The end.

So, yesterday I was getting ready to print out three of Teresa’s skeletons to hang up for some spooky decorations, and of course the printer ran out of ink after only one. (BTW, I absolutely hate it when people write “of coarse” in lieu of “of course”. I’ve been known to stop reading a blog post because this bothers me so very much. But, I’m not the grammar police, so onward.) At first I thought it was just light magenta, which we had, but NO it was also yellow which we did not have. And I have to have three skeletons because there are three of us. Duh. But I wasn’t willing to make a Target run with two short people in tow, so I am waiting, rather impatiently it seems, for the ink fairy godmother to make an appearance. Do I need to leave the empty cartridge under my pillow?

Something is eating my pumpkins on the front porch! Bird? Squirrel? Whatever it is, it needs to cease and desist. It took one of the small ones down onto the ground and ate the top off. I’m thinking that would have to be a fairly huge bird. Dangit, squirrels, you are messing with my favorite holiday display here. This means war.

I took these shots one day last week while waiting to pick up The Bubs for a quick jaunt to the library. Two ladies that work at the deli close to Bubby’s building were having a smoke break in the alley and gave me some strange looks as I sat in my car with my camera sticking out the open window. What? You’ve never seen a blogger at work before? You can only post so many pictures of your own kid before it starts to wear thin. She’s damn cute, but I need to broaden my horizons every once in a while.

When I was part of the “working world” I worked a few blocks from Bubby’s current employer. There are a lot of changes being made to that area of the city, revitalization and all. You notice the changes a lot more when you don’t see it every day. Not that these pictures reflect those changes. The bottom one looks like a band of pick-pocketers live inside, wearing rags and holey gloves, breaking into song at the drop of a top hat.

Happy Birthday to my sweet hubby Bubby. I hope your day is fun and sparkly and very non-ho-hum. You + me = what started this whole crazy mess in the first place. I love you.
p.s. GAWD, you’re old! Smooches.

Today we went on a field trip! A field trip that we have been talking about for eons! Because we never! stop! talking! ever! If you happen to think that I might be exaggerating, might I suggest you spend a few hours with my dear, sweet child. She’ll talk yer dang ears off. We have entered the Why Phase. I knew it was coming. I used to make up answers to the Whys when my nephews were small and my long-suffering sister would have to explain to them that I was just kidding, because those short people, they don’t get the sarcasm so much. My angelic sister put up with two small children and a teenager (me) all at the same time. She was too nice to tell me to go home. Of course, she’s my sister, not my mother, so I was probably a little more civil to her, but then there was the Ironing Incident…
I know this is how children learn and all, but does she have to learn quite so much in a single day? Can’t she spread it out a little? Say over the course of a week or month?

We had a fun time going on a hayride, exploring the hay maze, tunnel and slide, and buying more pumpkins. Because we only had like 6 on the front porch and that obviously wasn’t nearly enough. All the pics can be seen here if you wanna.

Today is Blog Action Day, a great movement to get bloggers to write about the environment today. I don’t really feel like we do anything grand enough to deserve a sermon from me. We recycle, we try not to bring home excess plastic bags, we buy organic when we can, we buy EnergyStar appliances, we try not to waste water. But there are many more people out there who do way more and are a great inspiration to us. So I’d like to point your attention to a few of those sources of inspiration.
Whoorl has a great post up today about eco-friendly household cleaners.
We utilitze Green Dimes to help reduce our junk mail. I wear their t-shirt all over town, go guerrilla marketing!
Sew Green is a blog I check regularly and has some great resources.
I’m new to his blog, but No Impact Man is quite inspirational.

Read something new today and maybe you’ll be inspired to make a change in your life.

One evening I was craving something chocolatey and after perusing my binder of dessert recipes, whipped up this quick dessert. It only makes four servings, so it seemed perfect. It was warm and gooey in the middle, but didn’t keep very well and seemed dried out around the edges. The recipe can be found here.

I give it a 3.5 out of 5 fruits.
Now back to our regularly scheduled pumpkin programming.

Another new shirt for Miss A. This time she picked out the shirt (blue, of course), the picture, and the paint color. From an entire folder labeled “Images Arwyn t-shirt” full of all sorts of things (princess! flowers! skull & crossbones!) she chose the dinosaur and I was inordinately pleased. When I was her age I categorically refused to wear anything containing lace, bows or a skirt (unless it was my favorite raggedy red & blue patchwork skirt). On Sunday mornings before church (and Sunday nights and Wednesday nights) my mom had to practically wrestle me to the ground or threaten me within an inch of my life. My sister resorted to bribes and compliments. Please let me curl your hair (read: burn the tops of your ears) and attach this horrendous bow? You look so pretty! I DO NOT LOOK PRETTY! Pretty was for girls that wore pink all the time (gag), squealed constantly, and wanted to be Barbie. I wanted to be tough, throw like a boy and spent a large amount of time channeling Wonder Woman. Frilly just isn’t in my DNA. I don’t think I would know what to do with a girly-girl. I have a hard enough time accepting that she likes the Disney Princesses.
Now if you’ll excuse me I have to look up the lyrics to the Super Why theme song because apparently I am not singing it properly.
