Workin’ 9 to 5

Tomorrow I begin a couple of weeks filling in at my old job in the pre-Arwyn days.  Grandma Dar-duh is coming to babysit this week, so I’m sure I’ll have lots of interesting things to say about that!  Please forgive my sporadic presence in advance.  I’ll be here when I can!

Adios

I’m off to visit Juju for the weekend!  Just me and my little green nano in the car for 3 1/2 hours each way.  I’ll be catching up on my craft sanity podcasts.  I won’t be responsible for anyone but myself for two whole days.  I told Juju earlier this week, “I don’t care what we do as long as it doesn’t involve me cleaning up poop.  I’d wipe your butt if I had to, but I really don’t want to.”  That’s love, my friends.

This weekend we babysat a friend’s daughter and took the girls to the park Saturday evening.  Bubby and I split up, each watching one kid and trying to ensure that nobody peed in their pants, got hurt or, you know STOLEN.  By the end of the night I was ready to crash after crafts, the park, dinner, ice cream and a quick trip to Arwyn’s grandma’s house.  I had no idea 7 year olds required so much entertainment.  Arwyn love, love, loved having a big friend to do everything with and copy.  We decided she needs a big sister.  Maybe then she’d quit pooping in her pants.

Sunday, after pancakes, a seriously ill-fated trip to Target (poop in the pants in aisle 4 and oh yeah, there’s no wipes in the diaper bag), lunch and more crafts, I broke out the board games.   Did you know that you can play 57 games of Guess Who? in a row, only to be saved by a phone call from your mother?  And if you win too many times in a row, your little opponent starts to get discouraged, so lighten up already and let her win a few.

Do the Twist

I had a pair of navy Dr. Scholl’s mules with the wooden soles when I was small. I LOVED those shoes almost as much as my mom hated them. They were especially great for pretending you were a galloping horse, if you could keep them on your feet while you galloped. I’m pretty sure I was directed to wear them outside a lot. When I saw these green slides in the Naturalizer catalog, the 7-year-old that still lives inside me desperately had to have them. (Bubby, in my defense, I had a 15% off coupon.) These don’t quite make that oh-so-satisfying clomping sound, although I haven’t tried galloping. But they are comfy, something the 31-year-old me appreciates a great deal. I can’t wait to show them to my mom when she visits in two weeks.

Newbie

Soooo, if you haven’t noticed I’m taking some time to adjust to wordpress and the whole new format and all.  Also, I am blowing my nose every 5.3 seconds and we are out of tissues, so I am currently using toilet paper.  Note to self:  buy some more f-ing tissues.  And Bubby took the camera to work (blatant thievery) so I can’t even show you a picture of the roll of toilet paper, because that would make for some excellent bloggin’.  I made a birthday card over the weekend and forgot to photograph it.  All I’ve been cooking is a big pot of water on the stove to moisten the air in the house so my drainage will continue to drain in all it’s drainy goodness.  I have no amusing stories to tell, no amazing feats to share.  So, yeah its a little quiet here, except for the sound of my honking nose.

Daily Dose

So, yeah the natural doc thing. In January I started seeing a doctor of natural medicine. I’d been having some health “issues” and felt that my family physician only wanted to treat the symptoms I displayed and never tried to get to the root of what was causing the problems in the first place. I knew about this doctor through some work that Bubby had done and after talking with a friend that had seen her, decided to give her a call.

I liked her and felt that a lot of what she said made sense to me. I knew that I would be making a big commitment if I decided to pursue this: change of diet, lifestyle and that pesky little matter of money. Insurance companies don’t look too fondly on the world of natural medicine, it seems. I was already shopping for organic food and filtering our water. If my health improved, I felt it would be worth the extra cost.

After three months of treatment the majority of the problems I was having before are gone. I have increased my water intake drastically and it is now just a part of my day. My immune system is still low and she is still concerned about my liver and adrenal system. I do not know how long I will have to continue the litany of pills and drops and I DO get frustrated with dietary restrictions that I’ve never thought about before. I will say that I do not adhere to the diet as strictly as I should and I’m sure this slows the process down. If I could just give up the cokes and sweets! Is life really worth living without Coke and dessert?!

One of the strangest and best side-effects of this whole process has been the common ground it gives me with my parents. I have talked to my mother a great deal about my current health concerns and hers, something that rarely happened in the past. She asks about my health and doctor appointments, something that has only happened when I was pregnant. My parents and I have a somewhat tense and shaky relationship and anything that gives us something to talk about that won’t cause even more tension is a wonderful gift. I’m trying hard not to focus on the dollars flowing out of our bank account and instead find the benefits of this journey. If I weren’t going through all of this myself, I wouldn’t understand their fascination with homeopathics. I joke with Aunt Banana that our parents are turning into hippies in their old age. Next thing you know they’ll be growing pot on the back forty of the family farm.
